The Trent-Severn Waterway is one of Ontario’s most iconic attractions, connecting Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay through a remarkable network of rivers, lakes, canals, and locks. While the waterway spans 386 kilometres, some of its most memorable experiences can be found right here in Orillia & Lake Country.
Whether you are arriving by boat, car, bicycle, or paddlecraft, you will discover historic lockstations, incredible engineering, waterfront dining and stays, and unforgettable scenery along this National Historic Site.
Lock 42: Exploring Severn Township
As the Trent-Severn Waterway winds through Severn Township, visitors can experience Locks 42, where the region’s waterways, forests, and Canadian Shield landscapes come together. This lockstation offers a front-row seat to the boating and paddling activity that makes the Trent-Severn so unique. Bring a picnic, watch vessels navigate the locks, or simply enjoy the peaceful waterfront setting. The surrounding area is ideal for photography, cycling, hiking and exploring some of the quieter corners of Orillia & Lake Country.
Nearby, you will find local favourite dining spot Sando Shack, known for its creative sandwiches, local beer and casual atmosphere, making it the perfect stop before or after a day on the water.

Big Chute Marine Railway (Lock 44)
No visit to the Trent-Severn Waterway is complete without experiencing the world-famous Big Chute Marine Railway.
Unlike a traditional lock, Big Chute transports boats over land on a giant rail-mounted carriage, carrying them between two sections of water. It remains the only operating marine railway of its kind in North America and is one of the most photographed attractions along the entire waterway. Visitors can spend hours watching boats ride the rails, exploring nearby trails, or enjoying the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Whether you are a boating enthusiast or simply curious about this incredible feat of engineering, Big Chute is a must-see destination.
Nearby you will find local favourite dining spot Riverhouse Restaurant, offering beautiful waterfront dining and patio views of the waterway in Severn Falls.

Lock 45: Port Severn & the Gateway to Georgian Bay
At the western end of the Trent-Severn Waterway sits Lock 45 in Port Severn, where the historic route meets the crystal-clear waters of Georgian Bay. For boaters completing the Trent-Severn journey, reaching Port Severn is a major milestone. For visitors arriving by land, it is an excellent destination for boating, paddling, sightseeing, and exploring the rugged beauty of Ontario’s cottage country.

Places to Eat & Stay
A visit to Port Severn isn’t complete without stopping at:
- Rawley Resort, offering waterfront accommodations, dining, spa experiences, and so much more.
- The Grill at Bush’s Marina, a casual local favourite for a meal overlooking the water.
- Treat yourself to Kawartha Dairy ice cream at Icebreaker at Bush’s Marina while watching boats pass through the Locks
- Trading Post Cabin offers baked goods, delicious caffeinated beverages, as well as local treats and unique gifts.
- The Port Severn General Store is a convenient stop for snacks, drinks, and travel essentials.
