Tourism Spotlight: The Sunken Ship is a Restaurant Oasis

While visiting “The Sunshine City” to soak up some of that famous lake country air, don’t miss out on the Orillia’s other main attraction: the foodie scene. Recent years have seen local restaurateurs perfect the balance between creative outdoor ambiance and a delicious spread.

Visitors aching for a beachy escape don’t have to look far. Meet local restaurant owners Tammy and Chris. This duo are seasoned experts on finessing the outdoor dining experience. Their newest venture, The Sunken Ship Tropical Bar and Tiki Lounge, previously known as “Tammies Place,” has become a wildly popular visitor spot in recent years thanks to its vacation-style patio and interiors.

While the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic saw a large demand for spacious outdoor dining experiences, Tammy and Chris used this opportunity to revamp their beloved family-style restaurant to include an expanded outdoor patio with a tropical theme. “Our island themed patio allowed for an escape to the beauty of the tropics right here at home”.

The new patio includes both private and semi-private wooden cabanas, along with an outdoor bar, fire pits, palm trees, Caribbean-themed décor, and an area for live music performances. If you’re in town for the weekend, be sure to pop in during one of their famous Hawaiian luaus on the patio!

After a wildly successful season, the pair expanded the renovation to include outdoor dining options during the winter months. Each year, the cabanas are transformed into 360 degree “ice crystals.” These cozy heated domes offer private dining experiences and a unique view of the season’s winter wonderland from within. Outside the domes, you can stay warm by the fire, make your own s’mores, and grab a signature cocktail at the ice bar.

In the fall of 2022, Tammy and Chris took the plunge and continued the renovations indoors. Renaming themselves “The Sunken Ship,” the interiors now center around a brand new 30-foot shipwreck bar. New decor includes indoor tiki huts and floor-to-ceiling murals. “Our guests are never bored as our walls and ceilings are canvased with elaborate Island themed murals designed by @nobullpainting that top off the immersive experience.”
