This new series profiles some of the notable people in the Township, and why they love to live, work and play in Oro-Medonte. The people that live here in Oro-Medonte are the experts, they are connected to the place and have a passion for the local culture and community.  We aim to highlight and share their stories and favourite places.

True Passion for Life in Oro-Medonte

Inspiring legions of Instagram followers with images and videos of spectacular local waterways, wildlife, parks and local eateries, Michelle Bloom has a true passion for life in Oro-Medonte.

A self-styled “lake life aficionado”, Michelle often starts her day on the shores of Lake Simcoe, near her home in Hawkestone, taking in spectacular sunrises. Her Instagram account @bloomfoto showcases jaw-dropping views of the scenic Lake Simcoe shoreline, with tantalizing photos and video captured on her early morning adventures.

For Michelle, kicking off her day on the lakeshore sets the tone for a lifestyle that she has grown to treasure since moving to Oro-Medonte in 2012: “Living across the road from the western shores of Simcoe has given me access to one of Ontario’s cleanest and most beautiful lakes. I am truly lucky.”

Michelle is an enthusiastic stand-up paddleboarder but this is just one of many outdoor activities that she enjoys frequently in Oro-Medonte. She is an avid hiker, cyclist, camper, angler and cross-country skier. Her favourite places include Bass Lake Provincial Park, George Langman Sanctuary, Simcoe County Forests and Hardwood Ski & Bike. “All of my favourite activities can be done right here in Oro-Medonte,” she explains.

Michelle’s enticing images of local sunrises, paddling experiences, angling and more have been featured by many local tourism organizations and media.

For her, capturing her natural surroundings, particularly at the start of her day, is a labour of love: “Time out there often alone while taking in a big sky and open horizon at dawn is something extraordinary. I take any and every opportunity to catch a sunrise on the water here. It helps to be a natural early bird!”

Love Where You Live

Michelle works for the County of Simcoe Paramedic Services in administration, and spends much of her free time taking advantage of the top-notch outdoor experiences available in Oro-Medonte and beyond: “There are four seasons worth of outdoor fun in Oro-Medonte with a wide range of activities to enjoy. This is what drew me to this area and has made it home for my family and I. Ongoing access to these remarkable outdoor spaces is what keeps us here,” she comments.

Another reason she loves to live in Oro-Medonte is the caring people: “Beyond the natural and rural environment we are in, it is the community that makes this a great place. I believe people care about this area and work hard to take care of it. Ensuring this continues for future generations will be key to maintaining this township’s legacy.”

Favourite Local Businesses

Michelle loves to indulge in local food and drink while supporting some notable local businesses in Oro-Medonte. One of her favourite places to dine is The Ktchn at Braestone Club: “This restaurant is a true favourite for my family. It’s such a treat to dine out there and the staff are fabulous.”

Another beloved place to gather with family and friends is Quayle’s Brewery, which she enjoys year-round. In February/ March, she makes a trip to Shaw’s Maple Syrup pancake house: “We stock up on their wonderful maple syrup regularly, but in February/March it’s a real treat to visit as a family.”

Since she is happiest when spending time on Oro-Medonte’s shoreline, it is no surprise that she lists Carthew Bay Pub & Scoops as a top spot for relaxation and fun: “Catching trivia or karaoke night, or seeing live music makes a visit to this lakefront spot even better.”
