Flavours of Ontario’s Lake Country Wins Best Event Celebrating Local Food & Culture
Ontario’s Lake Country attended the Simcoe County Agricultural Annual BBQ on July 7th at Partridge Family Farm in Oro-Medonte. The annual BBQ is also the host of the Simcoe County Food and Agriculture Charter Champion Awards, where local businesses and individuals are recognized for their work in supporting agriculture. Ontario’s Lake Country was the proud recipient of the Best Event Celebrating Local Food & Culture for their Flavours of Ontario’s Lake Country Event.
Flavours of Ontario’s Lake Country which is in its fourteenth season has grown and expanded over the last 7 years and is still a sought after event each spring and fall. The purpose of the Flavours event is to help showcase local restaurants and farmers in the area to visitors and residents. The event works with the local participating restaurants, they are required to create price fixed menus including a 2-course lunch and/or 3-course dinner. In addition to creating a set-menu, participating restaurants are required to create at least one feature item using locally sourced products. Ontario’s Lake Country will help the restaurant to make a connection with a local farmer or producer. This past spring Flavours, maple themed, occurred in April with 11 participating restaurants. The Fall Flavours, harvest theme, will take place from October 21 to November 6.
The new Flavours of Ontario’s Lake Country website, launched in fall 2015, www.FlavoursOfLakeCountry.com saw more than 16,774 page views this spring with over 2,200 menus downloaded from the participating restaurants. Jennifer Whitley, Executive Director with Ontario’s Lake Country says, “Locals look forward to this event but it also brings visiting friends and family to the area. The timing ties in well with some of the other events and activities happening which also brings out of town visitors to the region and gets them to stay longer, which is key for our organization.”
Ontario’s Lake Country is thankful for all of the relationships it has built with the restaurants and the farmers/producers and how successful Flavours has been. The new connections that have been established for businesses to work together in the region has been key in creating culinary opportunities in Ontario’s Lake Country. This is something the organization is currently working on, to develop and expand on more agri-culinary product and experiences unique to this region.
