SUMMARY:Arts for Peace Orillia
DESCRIPTION:After a 6 year hiatus\, Arts for Peace will once again bring folks together for a peaceful summer afternoon of music\, crafts\, dance\, storytelling\, yoga\, bubbles and community. \nStarted by members of Project Ploughshares Orillia\, a non-governmental organization that worked with churches\, governments and civilian groups to prevent war and promote peace\, the sunny festival on the grounds of the Leacock Museum has been honouring peacemakers from here and from around the world since 1983. \nA cancellation due to weather\, followed by the COVID pandemic\, led to several years where Arts for Peace did not take place. Now\, the next generation is getting involved by organizing and promoting a revival of this much loved local treasure with financial support from a City of Orillia grant. \n“We have teenagers who remember the Arts for Peace Festival fondly and wanted to be part of making it happen again. I suppose they are at the core of our effort to reinvigorate Arts for Peace\,” shared members of the organizing team Becky Bauman and Kara Sears. “We want our children to learn to be peacemakers in this world\, especially at a local level. We want to be part of a movement that takes peacemaking seriously.” Bauman went on to share that she “loves the simplicity of the idea that art might be a medium for building peace in our community. Maybe some new seeds will be sown this year that increase peace in the world at a time when war and conflict seem to be all around.” \nAdults and children of all ages will be able to enjoy performances by local artists and participate in a variety of activities featuring crafts\, stories\, music and circle dancing. \n“I think the focus\, being world peace\, must be in everyone’s hearts\,” said long-time event volunteer Lorna Bolden. “Locally\, it has become almost like a family reunion. People who were involved right at the beginning are now bringing their grandchildren.” \nThis grassroots community s festival is free to attend thanks to a grant from the City of Orillia and goodwill donations to cover costs. Specialty T-shirts will be also be sold at the event ($25). \nFor more information\, contact artsforpeaceorillia@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Coulson Concerts: Katherine Wheatley and James Gordon
DESCRIPTION:“The Coulson Concerts” is back for a third season of great Canadian music. This folk/roots series is presented in a quaint historic church in Oro-Medonte. It is located in the hamlet of Coulson at 301 Horseshoe Valley Road W.\, and hosted by local singer-songwriter Anne Walker. \nThe venue: This little white church has stood watch at the top of Coulson hill on the Horseshoe Valley Road for over 140 years. The church\, built in 1881\, was closed as a place of worship in the 1960s and recently restored preserving many original features\, including an ornate Victorian tin ceiling\, pews\, plank flooring\, a cast iron and nickel-plated stove\, and the original pulpit. Coulson Church provides an enchanting setting in which to enjoy authentic Canadian music. \nKatherine Wheatley and James Gordon\nSunday\, June 22 2pm \nAcoustic roots with catchy melodies\, arresting vocals\, great guitar playing\, lyrics that get you and that you get – these are all things that have been written over and over again about Katherine Wheatley’s music. She sings truth\, bravely\, and in detail. Like Shawn Colvin and Joni Mitchell\, Wheatley mines heartache and produces lyrical and melodic gold. https://www.katherinewheatley.com/ \nJames Gordon has been there. He’s done that. He has had a diverse and resilient career in the Canadian cultural sector. As a solo singer-songwriter and with the ground-breaking trio Tamarack\, he’s recorded 40 albums and toured relentlessly around the world. He’s written for symphony orchestras\, musical theatre and dance works\, scored films\, and for more than ten years was heard on CBC radio as songwriter-in-residence. Between tours\, James is a record producer\, playwright\, community activist and theatre director. https://jamesgordon.ca/ \nBuy Tickets
