Elevating Indigenous Voices

September 30 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

On Saturday, September 30, OMAH is hosting a one-hour presentation entitled, Elevating Indigenous Voices. It will focus on the work of Ziigwen Mixemong, an Anishinabek youth from Beausoleil First Nation. Performed by her mother, Kelly Brownbill, it will include excerpts from plays, poems and children’s books written by Ziigwen and Kelly that focus on the issues facing Indigenous people in our area, while underlining the importance of an ancient culture in our lives today. Kelly Brownbill’s spirit name, Wabunnoongakikwe, means Woman Who Comes from the East and she is proud to be Waabizhashi Dodem, Marten Clan. She is a member of the Flat Bay community of the Mi’kmaq Nation in Newfoundland. Kelly currently resides in Simcoe County and is a member of the Three Fires Midewin Lodge.
The presentation starts at 1pm in OMAH’s Upper Gallery.
Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. And, this year, is the 10th anniversary of Orange Shirt Day, This day honours the children who never returned and the survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.
