A Sweet Treat Tour Of Ontario’s Lake Country

How Sweet It Is, A Sweet Treat Tour Of Ontario’s Lake Country, another reason to visit SIMCOE COUNTY

By Marc Smith

How’s your sweet tooth? Mine is currently in heaven as I have just completed a sweet treat tour of Ontario’s Lake Country. I sampled fudge, fritters, chocolates, waffles, and craft cider. All locally made and fabulous. Whether you are driving through, coming for work, or planning a weekend escape you must take a minute to sample some of the sweetness that is made in Orillia and surrounding area. I made a stop before returning to Toronto to stock up on some goodies so I could bring the “cottage” back to the city with me. How sweet it is.

Apple Annie’s – Got a craving for some lip smacking good fudge? A visit to Apple Annie’s located in the basement of Mariposa Market on Mississauga Street will satisfy your craving. Made in house there is a large selection to choose from including Peanut Butter and Chocolate Swirl! They have more than just fudge though. They also serve up hand made chocolates and a fine selection of gourmet foods and kitchen gadgets.

Too Sweet – Crepe or Waffle? How about both? At Too Sweet on Mississauga Street you can have you choice topped the way you like it. I tried the Classic which is Bananas, Strawberries, and Whipped Cream drizzled with chocolate sauce. Both crepes and waffles are made to order and are big enough to share, although you may not want to. This is also the place in Orillia to get your Bubble Tea fix.

Mariposa Market – A local institution you must visit Mariposa Market for some of their homemade baking. Donuts, pies, Chelsea Buns, and cakes are just some of the sweets and treats they serve up. You can also order a coffee/tea and grab a seat to enjoy your sweet treat here. Recently they expanded with a cafe in the back. If there is a line at the counter you have at least three to choose from so service is always quick and comes with a smile.

Chelsea Chocolates – If you want some of the best chocolate you will ever taste hop in your car and head to 3471 Penetanguishene Road to visit Chelsea Chocolates. From the tiny retail shop you can peer into the production kitchen where Callebaut Chocolate is transformed from multi kilogram slabs into delicate truffles VQA Ice Wine filled balls. They make the best host/hostess gifts and the best part is you should probably pick up a couple for yourself at the same time.

Wilkie’s Bakery – Who wants a Butter Tart? Chances are if you are eating one at any restaurant in the area they come from Wilkie’s Bakery. They are some of the bets I’ve ever had, and I have eaten my weight in butter tarts! Whether you like them plain or with raisins I doubt a 6-pack will last more than a day. I picked up a dozen to bring back with me to Toronto and they only lasted a couple of days. There is more at Wilkie’s than just butter tarts. They also bake pies, Cinnamon and Chelsea Buns along with breads and cookies. Really though you need to try the butter tarts.

Heritage Estate Winery & Cidery – Craft Cider is the all the rage and at Heritage Estate they serve up two delicious 100% Ontario Apple Ciders. Eden’s Apple is for those that like their hard cider semi sweet. If you are like me and prefer your cider a little on the dry side try the Dragon’s Gold. They also have a nice selection of wines made from hybrid varietals grown on the estate.

Have I convinced you yet of how sweet your visit to Ontario’s Lake Country will be? There is something for every sweet tooth here no matter if you want to eat or drink your sweet treat.
